MUNICH

Last fall, some dreams I didn’t know I had came true: to go to Oktoberfest in Munich. And of course since this was bb’s first Germany trip there was the added bonus of exploring Munich to see what the city itself had to offer.

Though I understood the idea of Oktoberfest and was aware it was an all-ages event, I somehow didn’t anticipate the carnival rides. I don’t know what I had in mind, I think I went in with zero expectations but I never expected to be harkened back to the state fair as a child with the whiplash in themes from ride to ride. This is like the Louvre to me I’m so serious.

The main event, and of course what I expected, of Oktoberfest is the tents. We spent about a day and a half-ish tent hopping, one day with reserved tables and the other just on pure vibes and adrenaline. But regardless of the game plan, there’s so much fun to be had. Like it really is just a good time.

After some light debauchery, our group spent the day in Munich. One of the more structured activities we indulged in was the Residenz Museum, a former royal palace turned art museum. TBH I kinda blacked out the history because Bavarian royalty isn’t anything I really care to know about, but the takeaway is 1) art and 2) impressive ceilings.

While we stayed in a more residential area of the city, the trains were easy enough to figure out to go into Marienplatz, the city’s main square and start wandering around.

Some other highlights included the Viktualienmarkt, which is just..a market. Even though alien is hidden in the word, it really is just your standard city market which I always love to stroll through. The other stop to hold us over before another heavy dinner of schnitzel and Käsespätzle (German mac & cheese)was Cafe Frischut, known for its fried German donuts.

As our parting view, we paid the small price to see the view from the Munich Town Hall. This is one of those travel tips I thought was suuuuuper lame till I got there and was like nah, this one was worth it. I can also say with confidence I would go back to Oktoberfest, time and time again. This isn’t the last I’ll see of Munich.
